Hassan: The mortal remains of Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, was brought to Hassan district late on Sunday evening.Chennamma,89, passed away at a private hospital in Bengaluru on Saturday. Her final rites will be performed on Monday at Mavinakere, near Haradanahalli, the birth village of Deve Gowda. The couple spent 72 years together.Lakhs of people paid tributes during the journey from Bengaluru to Holenarasipura. The vehicle carrying the mortal remains was stopped at several places. Large crowds gathered at Bellur Cross in Nagamangala taluk in Mandya district and at Channarayapatna in Hassan district. Police had a herculean task in managing the surging crowd that gathered at Bellur Cross. Union minister HD Kumaraswamy travelled with the mortal remains.The body will be kept at Dairy Circle in Hassan for some time, before taking it to Holenarasipura town, which is located 32 km from Hassan city.The body will be kept for public viewing at the residence of her son and former minister HD Revanna in Holenarasipura from Sunday night to Monday morning.Thousands of people and functionaries from across political parties are expected to pay their last respects.CM, ministers to pay last respectChief minister DK Shivakumar, Union minister V Somanna and other dignitaries will attend the final rites. According to family members, the last rites will be performed between 2 pm and 4 pm. An emotional Revanna supervised arrangements at the foothills of Ranganath Swamy Hills in Mavinakere near Haradanahalli. Deve Gowda also visited the spot. JD(S) leader YSV Datta was seen consoling both father and son.Security and state honoursWith thousands expected to visit Holenarasipura, Hassan district police have made elaborate security arrangements. Southern Range IGP MB Boralingaiah inspected the arrangements. He said heavy vehicle movement will be diverted in the city to avoid vehicular congestion.Deputy commissioner KS Latha Kumari said the final rites will be conducted with full state honours. The DC also announced a ban on the sale of alcohol for two days in Hassan district.
