Kochi: Eloor municipality launched the second phase of its Waste-Free City Survey, aiming to achieve 100% source-level waste segregation and scientific waste management across the municipal area. The campaign, which will run from July to Oct, is part of the state’s Total Sanitation Mission and is being implemented in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, and a municipal council resolution adopted on June 16.As part of the initiative, National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers from Rajagiri College of Social Sciences will conduct door-to-door surveys covering households and commercial establishments across all municipal wards. Alongside the survey, volunteers will create awareness about segregating waste at source, efficient management of biodegradable waste and scientific disposal of different categories of waste.Haritha Kerala Mission resource person Suresh trained NSS volunteers on survey methodology, data collection and public interaction before the fieldwork began.“Residents will also be educated on handing over non-biodegradable waste exclusively to Haritha Karma Sena members and disposing of sanitary waste through municipality-approved agencies. The campaign will further publicise the municipality’s single WhatsApp number for reporting violations related to waste management,” said James S P, who serves as health superintendent and clean city manager for Eloor municipality.Municipality chairperson Liji Sajeevan said maintaining cleanliness was not solely the responsibility of govt agencies but required active public participation. She urged every household and institution to adopt source-level waste segregation and extend full cooperation to the survey teams.
