Nagpur: The anti-ragging committee of Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) on Tuesday directed its probe team to conduct an inquiry into the alleged ragging incident of June 25, which led to the filing of an FIR against four senior students.MNLU officials said the committee met to review the matter and decided that the academic interests of all students should be taken into account while determining any disciplinary action.Unlike in many ragging cases where students are suspended pending inquiry, the four accused have been allowed to continue attending classes and remain on campus without any restrictions.Responding to questions over the registration of an FIR before any internal disciplinary action or suspension, the MNLU administration said filing a police complaint was mandatory under the UGC’s anti-ragging regulations.Officials maintained that suspension is generally warranted only in cases involving serious offences or physical assault. “The allegations in the present case are relatively mild in nature, though they cannot be ignored. At the same time, registering a police case was necessary as a deterrent,” an official said.FIRs were filed against two third-year and two fifth-year students under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act. A second-year student alleged that he and other juniors were subjected to ragging in the boys’ hostel on the night of June 25.According to university officials, the matter first came to light through an anonymous complaint submitted on the UGC anti-ragging portal, following which the UGC directed the university to initiate action. However, the administration was initially unable to identify the alleged perpetrators. The inquiry gained momentum after a student came forward and formally named the four accused in a written complaint.
