Pithoragarh: A family in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district has appealed to the state govt for help after two of its members, who travelled to Russia for work have been out of contact for the past three weeks.Anand Singh Karki, 35, and his elder brother Bhupendra Singh Karki, 38, from Ranthi village in Dharchula, travelled to Russia in May after paying a local agent from Sitarganj in Udham Singh Nagar Rs 8 lakh for jobs that promised a monthly salary of Rs 70,000-80,000, along with food and accommodation. The family said they arranged the money by selling gold ornaments and taking high-interest loans.According to Anand’s wife, Tanuja Karki, the brothers reached Moscow on May 6 only to discover that they had been duped. She said their employer took away their passports and visas, made them work as housekeepers, and neither paid them nor provided food.Last month, the brothers told their family they were being moved to an unknown location. The family has not heard from them since.“In June, my husband told me they wanted to return to India because of very poor living conditions. Since then, we have had no information about where they are,” said Tanuja, who is nine months pregnant and has a three-year-old son.She submitted a memorandum through Pithoragarh district magistrate to chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday, seeking the government’s help to trace the brothers and bring them back to India. DM Ashish Kumar Bhatgai confirmed that the family’s appeal had been forwarded to the chief minister’s office.
