Freddy, the German football fan whose road trip across the United States has become one of the most talked-about fan stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is back on social media. After deactivating his X account about two weeks ago, he announced on July 13 that he will continue sharing updates from his journey. Posting from Clemson, South Carolina, Freddy said he returned because he wanted to document the final stretch of his trip. His comeback comes after weeks of speculation about why he left and whether he would continue visiting World Cup host cities across the country.
Why Freddy stepped away from X during his World Cup trip
In his return message, Freddy explained that growing negativity around his account pushed him to leave X. According to him, some users began questioning whether his story was real and tried to uncover his identity.“The main reason I deactivated my account two weeks ago was that things became increasingly toxic,” Freddy wrote. “For some people, it’s unfortunately unfathomable that a good story can exist without some kind of hidden agenda behind it.”He said a Reddit group went through his account looking for details that could reveal who he was. While he stressed that only a small number of people were involved, he admitted the situation became difficult to deal with over time.“I know this was only a small percentage of people, but after a while it became exhausting,” he said.Despite that experience, Freddy said the response he received during his break changed his mind. He revealed that many people reached out through Instagram to encourage him to continue the journey. Some messages, he said, came from followers who told him their grandparents regularly checked for updates about his travels.“I decided to continue because I realized that the overwhelming majority of people loved following along,” Freddy wrote. “A small group of very loud people shouldn’t be able to ruin something that brought so many others joy.”
Freddy clears up questions about past visits to the United States
Alongside explaining his return, Freddy also addressed claims about whether he had previously been to the United States. He said the current World Cup trip is not his first visit to the country and added that he never claimed otherwise. Freddy explained that his previous trip took place in January 2022, when he visited New York and Philadelphia. He also responded to discussion surrounding a Raising Cane’s post shared in November 2025. According to Freddy, that visit was not in the United States. He clarified that the restaurant was one of Raising Cane’s 19 locations in Saudi Arabia.Freddy added that this is his first trip back to the US in more than four years. He noted that, apart from Boston, the cities featured during his current World Cup journey were places he had never visited before. The football fan has become one of the unexpected breakout personalities of the 2026 World Cup. His posts documenting long drives between host cities and first-time experiences at well-known American spots such as Buc-ee’s, Waffle House and Taco Bell have attracted millions of views across social media. Before taking his break from X, Freddy’s updates had also caught the attention of major media outlets and football fans following every stop of his cross-country adventure. With the tournament moving into its final stages, he now plans to continue sharing the rest of the journey with the audience that convinced him to return.
