Kozhikode: A three-member expert committee from Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL), entrusted with Wayanad tunnel road project as SPV, began an internal investigation into the reasons for the landslip at the project site in Kalladi. The team comprises chief project manager (infrastructure) K Rajesh, deputy chief engineer S D Patil and senior geologist Vinay Sharma.KRCL said in an explanatory note that a landslide, triggered by heavy rain, caused the disaster 240m away from the excavated area. KRCL said Wayanad received 240mm of rain in 24 hours on July 7. The landslide occurred 110m above the tunnel crown. Because of the elevation difference, huge pressure was exerted on the downward slopes of the cut-and-cover area where slope protection works were carried out as per the approved design and drawings, it said.
