Viral video shows SI demanding Rs 1.5 lakh bribe; suspended

LUCKNOW: A sub-inspector posted at Rahimabad police station was suspended after a viral video allegedly showed him demanding a Rs 1.5 lakh bribe in connection with the investigation of a fraud case, police said on Thursday.The complainant, Vishnu Kumar, in a representation to the joint commissioner of police, alleged that sub-inspector, Guddu Prasad had been repeatedly demanding money while investigating a case involving his brother.He said that on May 17, the officer forcibly took his son to the police station, assaulted him and released him only after the family allegedly paid Rs 25,000.Kumar further alleged that the officer frequently visited their home at night and banged on the door to intimidate them. He said the officer also used abusive language with the women of the family and initially demanded Rs 2 lakh before reducing the amount to Rs 1.5 lakh.He alleged that the SI threatened to send the entire family to jail if the money was not paid.The officer was suspended with immediate effect, and the matter was handed over to the ACP, Aliganj, for an inquiry.“Based on the facts and evidence that emerge during the inquiry, appropriate departmental and legal action will be taken as per rules,” police said.
