Linux users have spent years watching every major AI app land on Windows and macOS first, then waiting their turn. That wait just ended. OpenAI has released a dedicated ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, rolling it out worldwide on Tuesday in preview, bundling ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex into a single native experience.The company pitched it as closing the last gap in its desktop lineup. Linux was one of the most-requested platforms for the desktop app, OpenAI said, and the launch extends ChatGPT and Codex across every major desktop operating system. On paper it’s a routine port. For a developer community that has been asking loudly, and for a long time, it reads differently.
Which Linux distros are supported, and what the app actually does
Support at launch covers Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44, across both x64 and ARM64, shipping as .deb and .rpm packages. That list looks thin next to the hundreds of distributions out there, but these are the bases for a long tail of downstream flavours, which should run the app fine as a result.What you get isn’t just a chat window in a new wrapper. OpenAI positions the desktop app as a workspace: parallel projects, documents and spreadsheets opened and inspected in place, browser and computer-use workflows, scheduled tasks set up inside an existing chat, and Codex running alongside ChatGPT rather than in a separate tool.OpenAI isn’t first here, though. Anthropic shipped a Claude desktop app for Linux roughly a month ago, and cast a wider net with it, supporting Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later. The preview tag on OpenAI’s build suggests the polish is still coming.
