Kottayam: A woman and her daughter passed away while undergoing treatment after four members of a family allegedly consumed pesticide at their home in Kottayam, reportedly due to severe financial distress.The deceased have been identified as Josna, 42, and her daughter Maria Theresa Thomas, 17. Josna’s husband, Thomas Abraham, 50, and their 12-year-old son Alan Thomas continue to undergo treatment at Kottayam govt medical college hospital (MCH).The family, from Mattappally in Kottayam, was admitted to the hospital last Monday afternoon after they were found to have consumed pesticide.Maria Theresa, a Plus Two student of Mattakkara Higher Secondary School, succumbed to her condition at around 5.30am on Saturday. Josna died later in the evening.Police said the family was reportedly under severe financial strain. Thomas is a farmer, while Josna was working as a temporary employee at a cooperative bank.Ayarkunnam police have registered a case invoking Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) for unnatural death conducting further investigation.According to Ayarkunnam police, the postmortem examinations of the deceased were conducted at Kottayam MCH and the bodies were handed over to the family for funeral rites on Sunday Further investigation is underway.
