With ‘The India Story’ gearing up for its theatrical release on July 24, the film has found itself embroiled in controversy. Director Chettan DK has now addressed reports suggesting that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had instructed the makers to make changes to the courtroom drama, asserting that no such directives were issued. Responding to speculation surrounding the film’s certification, Chettan DK clarified that the CBFC did not ask the team to remove or edit any scenes. He explained that a few portions were refined after discussions within the team. “There was no such cuts made. CBFC didn’t ask us to cut or remove anything. But, yes we as a team with Shreyas (Talpade) and Kajal (Aggarwal Kitchlu) we brainstormed a few scenes and improvised it.”

Addresses the ongoing controversy

The filmmaker also spoke about the criticism surrounding the project, saying he was prepared for strong reactions considering the subject the film explores.“If the subject is like this, people are bound to talk. Those who want to criticise will criticise, and those who want to stop it will try to stop it. But this is based on real facts and a real story. After watching the film, people will also understand how pesticides and chemicals should be used, and where the line should be drawn.”Chettan DK stressed that the film is not aimed at any individual or community but intends to encourage responsible use of chemicals.“We haven’t targeted anyone. Our point is simply that these chemicals should be used only to the extent necessary. If you overuse them and end up putting other people’s health at risk, that’s wrong.”

Legal notice puts film under scrutiny

The clarification comes after the makers reportedly received a legal notice over claims made in the teaser and promotional material for ‘The India Story’. According to reports, Bhavesh Sodha of Agri Business Centre has challenged the campaign, alleging that it contains unverified and misleading claims related to India’s agriculture, dairy and poultry sectors. The notice has also been served to Zee Studios and MIG Production & Studios LLP.Among the objections raised are the film’s references to food adulteration, pesticide usage, milk contamination and the alleged rise in cancer cases. The complainant has also questioned a scene depicting a syringe being injected into a chicken, describing it as scientifically inaccurate and potentially misleading.

Demand for scientific evidence

The legal notice reportedly asks the filmmakers to provide research and scientific evidence supporting the claims highlighted in the promotional campaign. It also seeks the removal of the teaser and other promotional material from digital platforms while requesting modifications before the film’s theatrical release.Reports further suggest that a copy of the notice has been submitted to the CBFC with a request to withhold certification until the disputed claims are either substantiated or revised. The makers have reportedly been given seven days to respond, failing which civil and criminal proceedings, including a plea to stay the release of the film, may be initiated.
