Sunny Deol continues his impressive streak in the entertainment industry following his comeback with the OTT courtroom drama ‘Ikka’. Up next for the actor is the historical Partition drama ‘Batwara 1947’, backed by Aamir Khan Productions. The makers unveiled a fresh poster on Monday, July 13, confirming that the film will hit theatres on August 14, 2026.
Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 poster out
The release date is especially meaningful, since the film is about the Partition of India and the pain of people who had to leave their homes in 1947. The makers shared the new poster for ‘Batwara 1947’ on X (formerly Twitter). The poster shows an idol of Lord Krishna with a glowing diya next to it, set against the backdrop of India and Pakistan’s division that year.
Sunny Deol’s film hints at dharma amid conflict
Along with the poster, the makers wrote, “When the world chose sides, HE chose dharma.” The caption seems to hint at the film’s exploration of righteousness and humanity during one of the most agonising chapters in the subcontinent’s history, suggesting that Sunny Deol’s character may find himself torn between religious divides, political turmoil and his own sense of what is morally right.

Reportedly, ‘Batwara 1947’ is based on Asghar Wajahat’s well-known play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. The story is about a Muslim family that gets a house after Partition, but finds the original Hindu owner still living there and refusing to leave. The film was earlier called Lahore 1947 but was renamed Batwara 1947 to give it a wider appeal. It is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and stars Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal and Abhimanyu Singh. Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit are producing the film, with music by AR Rahman and lyrics by Javed Akhtar.
