The New York Yankees are expected to add a catcher before the MLB trade deadline, and one familiar name is now being linked with the club. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, New York Mets catcher Luis Torrens could be a good fit for the Yankees. While Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers and Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman are also in the discussion, Torrens stands out as an affordable and familiar option.

Catchers linked to the Yankees before the trade deadline

Player Team Games Batting Average Home Runs RBIs Current Situation
Luis Torrens New York Mets 58 .214 2 18 Backup catcher, under contract through next season
Ryan Jeffers Minnesota Twins 37 .295 7 26 On injured list with a hamate fracture
Hunter Goodman Colorado Rockies .251 27 51 Having a breakout season, under team control

Why Jon Heyman believes Luis Torrens fits what the Yankees need

In his report for the New York Post, Heyman wrote, “Mets backup catcher Luis Torrens would be a nice fit for the Yankees, who seek catching help. Ryan Jeffers, a big hitter (.949 OPS) about to return from a hamate injury, makes sense, but the Twins are contending in an ultra-weak AL.”Torrens has played 58 games for the Mets this season, batting .214 with two home runs and 18 RBIs. His offensive numbers are not the biggest draw, but he is a dependable catcher who bats right-handed. The Yankees also know him well because he previously spent time in their farm system. His contract adds another reason why he could be an attractive trade target. Torrens is earning $4.75 million and remains under contract through next season, giving the Yankees a low-cost option if they want to improve behind the plate without making a major move.

Ryan Jeffers and Hunter Goodman remain strong alternatives

Torrens is not the only catcher connected to New York. ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan believes Ryan Jeffers is the Yankees’ best realistic trade target. He also described Hunter Goodman as the team’s “dream match” because of his age, power and long-term value.Passan wrote, “Though the market for catchers is thin, Minnesota could entertain moving Jeffers, an impending free agent, regardless of how well it is positioned. And between the much-needed right-handed balance and his production, he suits the Yankees perfectly. Even better, considering the Yankees have no ready-made prospect slated to take over behind the plate, is the 26-year-old Goodman, whose 27 home runs rank third in MLB.Jeffers is currently recovering from a hamate bone fracture after batting .295 with seven home runs, 26 RBIs and a .949 OPS in 37 games. Goodman, meanwhile, has hit .251 with 27 home runs and 51 RBIs, making him one of the league’s top power-hitting catchers. Which direction the Yankees take should become clearer as the trade deadline gets closer.
