Kerala school holiday today: Schools, colleges shut in 11 districts due to heavy rain; check full list

Several district administrations in Kerala have declared a holiday for schools and colleges today, August 3, as heavy rain continues across the state. The decision comes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of more rainfall in the coming days.Most districts have announced a holiday for all educational institutions as a precaution. However, Alappuzha has declared a partial holiday in selected areas.

Districts where schools and colleges are closed today

The following districts have announced a holiday for educational institutions on August 3:

  1. Palakkad
  2. Pathanamthitta
  3. Kannur
  4. Kozhikode
  5. Kasaragod
  6. Wayanad
  7. Malappuram
  8. Thrissur
  9. Kottayam
  10. Idukki

The holiday covers schools, colleges, professional colleges and, in most districts, also includes anganwadis, madrasas, tuition centres and coaching classes.

What will remain open?

While educational institutions are closed in these districts, scheduled public examinations, university examinations and interviews will be conducted as planned in most places. Candidates have been advised to follow the instructions issued by their respective institutions.Some districts have also clarified that residential schools and residential colleges will continue to function as usual.

Alappuzha declares partial holiday

Alappuzha has not announced a district-wide holiday.The holiday applies only to educational institutions functioning as relief camps, including professional colleges, in Chengannur and Kuttanad taluks. Anganwadis and tuition centres in these areas will also remain closed today.However, scheduled examinations will be held without any change.

Online classes allowed in Kozhikode

The Kozhikode district administration has said that while educational institutions will remain closed today, online classes can continue. The holiday does not apply to virtual learning.

Authorities issue safety advisory

District administrations have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers, streams, quarries, waterfalls and waterlogged areas. People living in flood- and landslide-prone locations have been asked to follow the instructions issued by local authorities.Students and parents have also been advised to stay indoors unless travel is necessary and regularly check official district announcements for the latest updates.

IMD issues rain alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall across Kerala.For today, August 3, a yellow alert is in place for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. The weather department has also warned of strong winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph in some parts of the state.Authorities have advised residents to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel and monitor official updates as the wet weather is expected to continue.
