Govt makes health education material mandatory for schoolchildren

Lucknow: The govt has asked the state-run institutions to integrate health-related educational materials like ‘My Health World’ and ‘Eat Right India’ into teaching to foster healthy dietary habits and smart lifestyle choices among the children.Director general of school education, Monika Rani, issued directives to include these materials into classroom teaching, morning assemblies, parent-teacher meetings, Bal Sabhas, and school health programmes.The directives come after the Union ministry of education and Union ministry of health and family welfare issued guidelines aimed at promoting preventive and promotive health education among school-going children.According to officials, the book ‘My Health World’ presents child-friendly information on healthy and unhealthy habits, nutrition, physical fitness, sleep, emotional well-being, and lifestyle choices.Teachers have been asked to encourage students to adopt balanced diets, regular exercise, yoga, sports participation, and adopt a responsible digital behaviour.Schools have also been encouraged to use learning resources developed under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s (FSSAI) ‘Eat Right India’ programme to strengthen nutrition education among students.In addition, schools have been recommended to hold special activities such as Bagless Day projects, poster-making, essay writing, quizzes, debates, role plays, skits, science-based activities, and awareness campaigns on ‘Healthy Food, Healthy Life’to engage students in health education.
