Chitradurga: Chief minister DK Shivakumar on Monday paid tribute to former Rajya Sabha member and irrigation activist H Hanumanthappa, recalling his relentless efforts to implement the Bhadra Upper Canal project aimed at bringing water to drought-prone regions such as Chitradurga.Speaking to reporters after offering floral tributes to Hanumanthappa’s mortal remains, kept at Murugharajendra Stadium for public viewing, Shivakumar said his contribution to the development of Chitradurga district was immense. He described Hanumanthappa as a driving force behind key agricultural initiatives, irrigation projects and struggles for farmers’ welfare. “He consistently raised the district’s concerns in Parliament and before successive govts,” the CM said.Shivakumar noted that Hanumanthappa had served as chairperson of the Railway Commission and was elected to the Rajya Sabha three times. He also recalled his close association with Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, saying he earned recognition as a national-level guide and leader.Responding to questions on the drought situation, Shivakumar said a review meeting for the Bengaluru division would be convened soon and appropriate decisions taken after discussions with Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara.As part of official honours, police accorded a ceremonial three-round gun salute followed by a two-minute silence. Shivakumar handed over the national flag draped over Hanumanthappa’s body to his son, G.H. Mohan. The last rites were later performed at Jogimatti Muktidhama.Among those who paid their final respects were deputy chief minister G Parameshwara, MP Govind Karjol, MLAs T Raghumurthy, Gopalakrishna and KC Veerendra Pappi, MLC KS Naveen, senior police and district officials, and public representatives.
