What began as a late night scroll through Instagram has blossomed into one of social media’s most talked about international love stories.Jordan Hauenschild, who lives on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast in Australia, first came across Pitiuruk’s Instagram profile in December 2023. Intrigued by his posts about life in the Amazon rainforest, she decided to send him a direct message without expecting a reply.That one message changed both of their lives.
An Instagram message that started a global love story
Jordan had stumbled upon the profile of Pitiuruk, a 24 year old Indigenous man from Ecuador’s Amazon region, while browsing Instagram’s Explore page.Curious about his culture and way of life, she reached out to him.Speaking to news.com.au in 2024, Jordan recalled, “I was just doing the late night doom scroll before bed and I came across this gorgeous man who was posting incredible content over in a country I knew nothing about.”She admitted she never expected him to respond.Instead, the pair began chatting every day, using Google Translate to bridge the language gap. Their conversations revolved around their vastly different lifestyles, families, homes, traditions and cultures.“We started showing each other our houses, our families and what’s inside our houses as well,” Jordan later shared.
From video calls to meeting in the Amazon rainforest
After spending nearly four months talking daily through messages and video calls, Jordan made a bold decision.She quit her 9-to-5 office job, booked a South American trip and added one more destination to her itinerary meeting Pitiuruk in Ecuador.The journey involved four flights spanning more than 30 hours, followed by a five hour bus ride from Quito to his family home in Ecuador’s Pastaza province.Despite never meeting in person before, Jordan said she immediately felt at ease.“I just couldn’t believe he was real,” she said.The pair quickly developed a romantic connection, even though they could barely speak each other’s language.Jordan said body language and genuine emotions became their strongest form of communication.“If the spark is there, it doesn’t matter if you can’t speak each other’s language,” she said.
Immersing herself in Indigenous life
She quit her 9-to-5 for love in the Amazon rainforest.
During her two week stay, Jordan lived with Pitiuruk’s family in the Amazon rainforest.She woke up to the sound of drums, helped prepare meals, visited local farms and experienced Indigenous traditions firsthand.Pitiuruk’s family, who welcome visitors through cultural tourism, introduced her to their ancestral customs and daily life.Jordan recalled being warmly welcomed with one phrase that stayed with her.“Our jungle is your jungle.”She also learned how the family has embraced social media and tourism to preserve and share their Indigenous heritage while continuing to live according to their traditions.
Social media turns the couple into internet favourites
One Instagram DM changed her life forever.
When Jordan documented her journey on TikTok, the videos quickly went viral.Millions of viewers became invested in the unlikely romance, flooding the comments with messages of support.One user wrote, “We’re too invested now. It’s not your love story. It’s our love story.”Others shared similar experiences of finding love across borders and languages.Jordan said she was overwhelmed by the response and grateful that people around the world connected with their story.
Pitiuruk visits Australia
Pitiuruk’s first trip to Australia was nothing short of magical.
The relationship continued to grow despite challenges including a 15 hour time difference, limited internet access in the rainforest and language barriers.Jordan began learning Spanish after returning to Australia, while the couple continued to rely on Google Translate to communicate.Their story gained even more attention when travel company Flight Centre offered to sponsor Jordan’s return flights to Ecuador, allowing the couple to reunite sooner than expected.Later, Pitiuruk travelled to Australia, experiencing international air travel for the first time and exploring Jordan’s world.Speaking about his visit, he enthusiastically praised Australian pubs, beer and even Chinese food.
The couple opens up about their future
From Australia to the Amazon, love found a way.
In 2025, Jordan and Pitiuruk appeared on The Project, where they reflected on the remarkable journey that began with a single Instagram message.Jordan revealed she had been fascinated by how someone her age could be living such a completely different life.The couple also spoke about the practical challenges of maintaining a long distance relationship, including different languages, unreliable internet connections and opposite time zones.Despite those hurdles, they said their emotional connection has remained strong.Looking ahead, Jordan hopes Pitiuruk can return to Australia for Christmas and New Year celebrations.Asked about their long term plans, she said they simply wanted to be together wherever life takes them.“When you find something so reciprocal, it doesn’t matter how far away you are, what language you speak or what culture you come from. It’s worth the fight every day,” she said.
