Aryna Sabalenka’s visit to Belarus has sparked a debate online, with some fans questioning her stance on the Russia-Ukraine war after she received a warm welcome during a trip to Minsk. The World No. 1 returned home days after her Wimbledon exit and took part in the opening of a new tennis facility while also spending time with young players during a tennis masterclass. While many in Belarus celebrated her return, some social media users argued that the visit did not match the neutral position Sabalenka has publicly maintained since the war began. Sabalenka has repeatedly said she does not support war, but she has avoided directly criticizing Belarus’ leadership. That has now become the center of a fresh discussion online.

Aryna Sabalenka’s Belarus visit draws criticism from fans over her ‘neutral’ position

Photos and videos from Sabalenka’s visit to Minsk quickly spread across social media. The Belarusian star was welcomed warmly as one of the country’s biggest sporting figures, but the reaction online was far from unanimous.Several fans accused her of contradicting her previous comments about not supporting the war in Ukraine. Some posts claimed that her appearance at public events in Belarus made it difficult for them to view her as neutral. One fan wrote, “Sabalenka continues to prove to everyone that she is not neutral lol.”Another said, “Oh, well, all her words about ‘I don’t support the war in Ukraine’ disappear in an instant, because she will be financing the war while being on the territory of Belarus.”A third user posted, “Neutrality pouring through her veins.”The criticism largely focused on the symbolism of her visit rather than anything she said during the trip. Sabalenka herself did not make any public political statement while attending the events in Minsk.

Aryna Sabalenka’s influence on young players becomes part of the online debate

Not all of the discussion was about Sabalenka’s visit itself. Some fans pointed to her status as one of the biggest names in women’s tennis and argued that her voice could carry significant weight, especially among young people in Belarus. One social media user compared her situation to Daria Kasatkina, who has openly criticized the Russian government and later changed her sporting nationality to Australia.“Kasatkina went away from fascist ruzzia and changed nationality. Saba is visiting fascist beloruzzia,” the fan wrote.Another user suggested that if Sabalenka openly spoke against Belarus’ role in the conflict, many people in her home country would listen. The debate comes at a time when Sabalenka is trying to move on from a disappointing Wimbledon campaign. The Belarusian was knocked out in the fourth round by Naomi Osaka in straight sets, ending her hopes of winning the title. Osaka defeated Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6(2) to reach the quarterfinals. Despite that setback, Sabalenka remains World No. 1 and will now turn her attention to the North American hard-court season. Her next major stops are expected to include the Canadian Open and the US Open, where she will enter as the defending champion. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, players from Russia and Belarus have continued competing on the WTA Tour and at Grand Slam events without their national flags being displayed.
