Hyderabad: US-based biopharma giant Amgen plans to open a new science and innovation centre in Genome Valley in Hyderabad, marking an expansion of its global research and development network that comprises seven research laboratories worldwide.The company, which already has a global capability centre in Hyderabad, expects the new science and innovation centre to become operational in 2027.Amgen said the facility will focus on discovery chemistry, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, precision medicine, data science and digital technologies, and will work closely with Amgen research sites globally.The centre will integrate experimental science with advanced data and technology tools to speed the discovery and development of medicines. The company said the Hyderabad site will complement its existing technology and innovation operations in the city, allowing closer links between wet-laboratory research and digital innovation.Telangana IT & industries minister D Sridhar Babu said Amgen’s decision reflected Hyderabad’s growing prowess as a global hub for high-value research and innovation, building on its established strengths in pharmaceuticals and vaccines.“Hyderabad brings together scientific talent, technology and industry at scale and has built one of the world’s strongest life sciences ecosystems, with deep capabilities in pharmaceuticals and vaccines. The next chapter is about taking that strength into discovery and innovation. Our ambition is to make Hyderabad a place where the next generation of medicines and therapies can be discovered, developed and taken to the world,” Sridhar Babu said.Jay Bradner, executive vice president of research and development, artificial intelligence and data, Amgen, said the Genome Valley centre complements the company’s strong US-based R&D footprint and would expand the company’s ability to connect science, data and technology across its global research system and translate insights into new medicines.Som Chattopadhyay, senior vice president of global business solutions and national executive, Amgen, said with this, India becomes an important part of Amgen’s R&D network.Naveen Gullapalli, managing director of Amgen India, said Hyderabad’s STEM talent and life sciences ecosystem would support advanced technologies at scale. “Our new centre at Genome Valley will help integrate biotechnology and digital innovation to serve more patients globally,” he added.
