Ajmer: A man was allegedly duped of Rs 3.59 lakh after contacting a mobile number found through a Google search while applying for a credit card. The fraud was reported to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP), following which a zero FIR was registered Saturday before being transferred to Ajmer cyber police Tuesday for investigation. The complainant, Henry Mathur, a resident of Paras Apartment in Ajmer, told police that he searched online for a credit card provider and found a company name along with a mobile number on Google. Believing it to be genuine, he contacted the number. According to police, the person on the call introduced himself as a company representative and explained various credit card offers and benefits. After gaining Mathur’s confidence, the caller initiated the online application process and informed him that certain charges were required for issuing the card. During the process, fraudsters allegedly gained access to his banking details and withdrew Rs 3,59,933 from his account. Realising he had been cheated, Mathur immediately lodged a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Head constable Hitendra Bagdi of the Ajmer cyber police station said the case is under investigation. Police have urged people to verify customer care numbers and company contact details only through official websites and avoid relying solely on phone numbers displayed in online search results.
