Tirunelveli: Tirunelveli police shot and apprehended an accused in the Veeravanallur double murder case in the early hours of Friday after he resisted arrest and attacked a constable with a sickle. Both the accused, who was injured in the leg, and the policeman have been admitted to Tirunelveli Govt Medical College Hospital.The accused, Krishnan alias Ajith, 28, of Moolachi, was part of the gang which murdered Kalimuthu, 40, and caused the death of his five-year-old son Jayaraj on July 2 at Veeravanallur near Kalladaikurichi.Acting on a tip that Ajith was hiding in the ‘80-foot canal’ near a forest area within Veeravanallur police limits, a special team launched a search. Police said when they tried to arrest him, he attacked constable Paramasivam with a sickle, causing severe cut injuries on his left hand.In self-defence, a sub-inspector attached to Tirunelveli district police fired at Ajith’s legs, causing him a bullet injury on his left leg below the knee. The injured constable and the accused were given initial treatment at Cheranmahadevi and later admitted to the medical college hospital. Police said another accused, Subash, was arrested on Thursday night and hospitalised due to health issues while Mani, alias Manimaran, surrendered before a judicial magistrate earlier, raising the total arrests to 14, which includes a minor.It was around 3pm on July 2 that a gang rammed their car against the two-wheeler on which Kalimuthu, a resident of Moolachi village near Kalladaikurichi, and his two sons were travelling. They hacked Kalimuthu to death, severed his head and placed it on the Karambai state highway near Kallidaikurichi. His five-year-old son, Jayaraj, died in the impact of the fall from the bike while his elder son Chinnadurai, 15, is under treatment in a hospital.
