Man dies in crash after police pursuit across Queensland and northern NSW

A man has died in northern NSW after a police pursuit that crossed the Queensland and NSW border.

NSW Police says officers responded to a report from Queensland police about 1am Sunday that a man, allegedly armed with a firearm, had travelled south over the border after a pursuit.

Officers found the man driving a ute at Banora Point, where a pursuit began after he failed to stop.

“The pursuit continued through multiple nearby suburbs before road spikes were successfully deployed against the Ford twice in South Murwillumbah,” a NSW Police spokesperson said in a statement.

“The man continued to drive from police until finally stopping down an embankment on Kyogle Road, Kunghur, about 26 kilometres south-west of Murwillumbah, about 2am today.

“Police established a perimeter around the Ford before police negotiators were deployed to speak to the man; however, as police approached the vehicle they found the driver unconscious.

Officers immediately commenced CPR on the man; however, he died at the scene.

The spokesperson said the man was yet to be identified, but was believed to be a 25-year-old Queensland man.

Police said a firearm was found in the vehicle, which would be sent for forensic examination.

Critical incident

NSW Police has established a critical incident investigation to examine the response of officers in the incident.

“A critical incident team from Richmond Police District will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and a report will be prepared for the information of the NSW Coroner,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

The investigation findings will then be independently reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
