Kochi: In the wake of multiple incidents of speeding vehicles skidding on roads this monsoon, the motor vehicles department (MVD) has started round-the-clock patrolling on new national highways in Kerala.The patrolling will continue for one month as hydroplaning – a phenomenon where speeding vehicles losing traction on roads in the rain – resulted in accidents like the one in Kuttipuram, Malappuram, last week.“We are focusing on new national highways where often vehicles speed. This often results in accidents in rain due to hydroplaning. When a vehicle is speeding in rain, the wheel loses traction as water under tyre is not released and skids when the driver suddenly applies brake. We will book those who speed on the new highways,” said an MVD official.The transport commissioner had issued a direction in this regard last month.
