Man arrested in connection to fatal stabbing of Brandon Yates in Wollongong

Police have arrested a man 10 months after 28-year-old Brandon Yates was fatally stabbed in the Illawarra.

The 28-year-old was found with stab wounds to his chest in the early hours of Sunday, August 17, 2025, at a unit on Crown Street in Wollongong.

He died in hospital the following Saturday.

At 6:30 this morning, police executed a search warrant in Wollongong, where they arrested a 41-year-old man.

He has been taken to Wollongong Police Station, where inquiries are continuing.

It follows extensive inquiries by Strike Force Alcalde, which was set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing incident.

In November, police released CCTV of a person wanted in connection with the stabbing in Wollongong.

The footage was recorded from a street near the incident.

At the time, Wollongong Superintendent Karen Cook said Mr Yates was stabbed “within the vicinity of the unit block on Crown Street” and that no weapon had been found.

She also said Mr Yates lived with a cognitive impairment, was known to police for minor offences, and would frequently visit residents of the unit block.

The victim’s family had previously made an emotional plea for information that would lead to a breakthrough in the case.

His sister, Shantelle Yates, and grandmother, Rossilynne Yates, said they were hoping for answers.

“It’s all so senseless,” Rossilynne Yates said at the time.

“Give us closure at least.”
