Ahmedabad: A fresh controversy has erupted at Gujarat University over the alleged lack of police verifications for security guards deployed on the campus.NSUI claimed on Wednesday that a large number of guards working under newly appointed Panther Security Agency had not undergone mandatory police verification.According to the student organisation, the university currently has around 184 security guards, but police verification has reportedly been completed for only 30 to 35 of them. Student leaders submitted a memorandum to GU authorities, demanding action against the officials responsible for the alleged lapse.Security arrangements at GU have been controversial for several years, with student organisations previously raising allegations regarding the functioning of security agencies and incidents of irregularities on campus. Following prolonged controversy, the university removed the earlier agency and awarded the contract to Panther Security Agency.NSUI leaders said that police verification is essential for guards working at an educational institution, particularly one visited by thousands of students every day. They demanded that guards without verification be removed immediately and that the security agency be blacklisted if violations are established.The activists also warned of agitations if appropriate action is not taken in the coming days.However, a university official rejected the allegations, stating that police verification of all security guards deployed at the university has been completed. The conflicting claims have raised questions about the actual status of the verification process and whether the university will conduct a fresh review of the agency’s records.
