A perfectly ordinary flight can change in seconds. One moment, the cabin is quiet and people are watching a movie, sleeping or chatting. Then the aircraft gives a sudden jolt, drops slightly or moves sideways, and the stomach seems to follow it down.That strange sinking sensation can be startling, even for people who are otherwise comfortable flying. Some passengers immediately grip their seats. Others feel their heart race, muscles tighten or breathing become quicker. A few may develop nausea, dizziness or sweating.The important thing to understand is that the sensation does not necessarily mean the aircraft is suddenly falling. Turbulence is a change in the movement of air around the aircraft, and the human balance system is extremely sensitive to changes in movement. The brain receives information from the inner ear, eyes and other parts of the body, then tries to make sense of it.During a sudden movement, that information, for a short period of time, can feel out of sync. The result is the familiar “stomach drop”.

Why does the stomach suddenly feel like it has fallen?

The inner ear has a specialised balance system called the vestibular system. It continuously sends the brain information about movement, direction and changes in position.The eyes provide another stream of information. At the same time, muscles and joints tell the brain how the body is positioned.Usually, all these signals agree. During turbulence, they can change rapidly and unexpectedly. The aircraft may move upward, downward or sideways while the body inside it is still responding to that movement.That is why the sensation can arrive almost instantly. The body detects the physical change before the conscious mind has had time to think, “The plane is moving.”Dr Pankaj Agarwal, Director of Neurology, Stroke and Neurocritical Care at Gleneagles Hospital Parel, Mumbai, explained why the sensation can feel so dramatic, “Imagine that you are going on a vacation or an office trip. You might be happy after boarding the aircraft. Though the sudden air turbulence can steal peace of mind. Air turbulence can be disturbing for many people. That sudden sinking sensation during turbulence can be alarming and distressing. However, it is the normal response to changes in the aircraft’s movement and your body’s balance system. So, when the aircraft suddenly moves up, down, or sideways during turbulence, the body is able to notice the change on an immediate basis. Hence, you tend to feel your stomach drop before you have even processed what is happening.”There is another part to this sensation. The organs and tissues inside the abdomen also experience changes in acceleration and movement. That can contribute to the peculiar feeling that the stomach has moved or dropped. But the stomach is not actually falling inside the body. It is a sensation created by the body’s response to sudden movement.

Turbulence can affect more than the stomach

For some passengers, the physical sensation ends as soon as the aircraft becomes steady again. For others, turbulence can trigger symptoms similar to motion sickness.The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that motion sickness can occur when what the eyes see does not match what the inner ear senses. Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, sweating, warmth, headache and general discomfort can follow.This explains why reading a book or staring at a phone during a rough flight or even while traveling in a car can make some people feel worse. The eyes are focused on something that appears relatively still, while the inner ear is detecting movement.The nervous system can also respond to turbulence as a sudden stressor. A sharp jolt can make the heart beat faster, muscles tighten and breathing change. Once these sensations appear, the brain may interpret them as signs that something is wrong. That can create an unpleasant loop.The person feels the aircraft move, the body reacts, the heart races, and the brain notices those physical changes. Anxiety can then make the sensations feel even stronger.As Dr Agarwal explained, “Even turbulence can trigger the body’s stress response. A sudden jolt can raise the heart rate, muscles can get tensed, and breathing can change as well. Hence, the brain will consider these changes a threat, and you can feel uncomfortable. So, it may not be harmful or worrisome, but it can make you feel overwhelmed.”This distinction matters. Feeling frightened during turbulence does not automatically mean the body is in danger. At the same time, turbulence itself should not be treated casually because sudden movements can cause real injuries, particularly when passengers are not secured.

What can help the body settle after turbulence?

Once the aircraft becomes stable, the body usually needs only a little time to settle. The first step is to stop fighting the sensation.Slow, controlled breathing can help bring breathing and muscle tension back towards normal. Dr Agarwal specifically advised passengers to breathe slowly and focus on a fixed point during turbulence.If nausea or dizziness develops, putting away the phone or book can help. Looking at a fixed point is generally more useful than trying to concentrate on a moving screen.Hydration can also help, particularly after vomiting. The CDC recommends drinking water and avoiding excessive alcohol during travel.Food matters too. A very heavy meal immediately before or during a flight may make an already unsettled stomach feel worse.For people who regularly experience significant motion sickness, medicines may be an option. But they should not be taken casually. Some motion-sickness medicines can cause drowsiness and other side effects, so a doctor or pharmacist can help decide whether one is appropriate.Persistent or unusually severe dizziness, repeated vomiting, fainting, severe headache, chest pain, breathing difficulty or symptoms that do not settle should not simply be blamed on turbulence. Such symptoms warrant medical assessment.

A small seat-belt habit can make a big difference

There is perhaps one piece of advice that matters more than all the others: keep the seat belt fastened whenever seated, even when the sign is off.When turbulence begins, passengers should follow the instructions of the cabin crew and avoid getting up unless necessary. Loose objects should also be secured because they can become hazards during sudden movement.For someone who knows that turbulence causes anxiety, preparation can begin before take-off. Sleeping properly, avoiding excess alcohol and limiting factors that worsen motion sickness can make the journey easier. The CDC notes that sleep deprivation can worsen motion sickness, while alcohol and smoking can increase it.And when the aircraft suddenly gives that familiar stomach-dropping sensation, the first reaction does not have to be panic. The body has detected movement. The balance system has reacted quickly. The brain is catching up and trying to interpret those signals.That brief disconnect can feel surprisingly powerful, but understanding it can take some of the fear out of the moment.
