Illegally-sourced timber seized in Goalpara

Dhubri: Forest officials seized a large quantity of allegedly illegally extracted sal and teak timber in Goalpara district.Acting on intelligence, forest department and forest protection force personnel raided a suspected illegal storage site in Paitari and Kaljani on Sunday.The operation was supervised by Goalpara divisional forest officer Tejash Mariswamy and led by assistant conservator of forests Tajuddin Ahmed. A preliminary investigation indicated the suspected involvement of Jamaluddin Sikdar and Ainal Haque.“The seized timber was taken into the custody of the forest department, and legal proceedings were initiated against the accused under the relevant provisions of the forest laws,” an official said.

The operation was conducted following directives from Assam forest and environment minister Jayanta Mallabaruah. An investigation is underway to trace the network involved.“The forest department is committed to taking strict action against individuals and syndicates involved in the illegal felling, storage and transportation of forest produce. Such operations will continue across the district to curb the activities of the timber mafia and safeguard the state’s natural resources,” the official added.
