Sara Ali Khan has never been shy about talking numbers when it comes to her weight loss, but her recent with Curly Tales, added a fresh, funnier layer to a story fans have heard in bits and pieces over the years. From ordering two medium pizzas a day because of a “deal” she didn’t quite calculate right, to eating three brownies on a seven-minute walk to class, the actor’s New York college days sound less like discipline and more like chaos with a side of cheese. But this recent confession is really just the opening chapter of a much longer journey. In an old conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia, Sara once mentioned that she got a life-changing nudge from Karan Johar to lose weight. Her weight loss journey included a broken weighing scale, and an ongoing battle that, by her own admission, never fully goes away.

The pizza math she never did

Speaking to Curly Tales, Sara confirmed the pizza rumors were true. When Sara studied in New York, she explained, a large pizza cost more than two medium ones combined, thanks to a buy-one-get-one-half-off deal. What she didn’t factor in was that eating two mediums also meant eating roughly 50 percent more food. “I didn’t do the math properly,” she admitted, adding that this wasn’t a once-in-a-while indulgence; it was a near-daily habit.Breakfast wasn’t any lighter, either. Three chocolate chip brownies, eaten mindlessly during the short walk from her cafeteria to class, were her go-to morning fuel.

From 96 kg to a Bollywood debut

That eating pattern eventually caught up with her, and Sara has spoken openly about weighing 96 kg before shedding 45 kg ahead of her 2018 debut in Kedarnath. The transformation wasn’t just about vanity, it was Karan Johar who reportedly told her she’d need to lose “half of her” weight if she wanted the film. That push became the turning point.

“I broke the weighing scale”

Sara recalled to Ranveer Allahbadia the mindset that kept her stuck for a while. She joked that she wasn’t just overweight, she “broke the weighing scale,” but the deeper point was about the downward spiral; once you’re already fat, the logic of “what’s a few more kilos” takes over, and one brownie turns into the next. She agreed with Ranveer that this “fat kid” complex doesn’t really disappear; it just sits quietly in the back of the mind.

The discipline that followed and still continues

By 2018, Sara told Pinkvilla she’d switched to a no sugar, no milk, no carbs routine to maintain her physique. But the work hasn’t stopped there. She’s admitted that even years later, she’s occasionally been asked to lose weight again, noticing it first in her face and in how her clothes fit.“I really have to be extremely mindful of what I am eating,” she said, adding “Every time I overeat or when I am touching that 60 kg mark, you can start seeing that I am not feeling okay” she said in the BeerBicep podcast. Her larger message to anyone struggling with weight is simple: it’s never just about how you look. It’s about how you feel, function, and stay balanced, inside and out.
