The police investigation linked to assault allegations against New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith has been closed, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. Davie Police in Florida reportedly declared the case inactive and did not file any charges against Smith following a review of an incident that drew widespread attention after a video surfaced online in June. Authorities said any future action would depend on new evidence or information being provided. The case stemmed from an argument between Smith and a woman outside his Florida home on June 21, with both sides giving very different accounts of what happened that day.
What Geno Smith told police about the June 21 incident
According to an incident report cited by TMZ, Smith told officers he was taking a shower when he heard a disturbance outside his home. He said he found his son’s caretaker inside the house without permission.Smith reportedly told police that the woman worked for him and that they were not in a romantic relationship. He also said he had previously asked her to leave his son with his mother at a security gate instead of entering the property.Smith claimed the woman left the house carrying a bag that he believed contained his personal belongings. He followed her to her vehicle, where he alleged she began pushing and punching him. According to the report, Smith then took her laptop, describing it as collateral for the items he believed had been removed from his home.He told officers that the woman later entered his office and attempted to leave with designer watches and jewelry worth around $20 million. Smith said he recovered the items before escorting her out of the house. The quarterback also alleged that when she tried to come back inside, he pushed her away and was scratched during the confrontation. Officers reportedly observed scratches on Smith’s face and a knot on the back of his head.
Woman’s allegations and why the investigation was closed
The woman gave police a very different version of events. According to the incident report, she said she entered the home because Smith had threatened to report her for kidnapping if she did not bring his son directly to the residence. She told officers that after dropping off the child, she took a gift she had purchased and left. She then claimed Smith followed her to her vehicle, took her laptop and $800, and pushed her to the ground. The woman admitted taking watches from Smith’s office but said she did so only because she wanted her belongings returned. She also accused Smith of grabbing, hitting and choking her during the dispute.Officers reportedly noted a cut between her thumb and index finger along with a bruise on her arm. However, they did not observe marks that would support the choking allegation.Police attempted several times to obtain sworn statements from both Smith and the woman, but neither side provided one. According to Cimini’s report, investigators later declared the case inactive, and no charges were filed. The dispute gained national attention after the woman posted video footage and allegations on a private Instagram account. In response, the mother of Smith’s son publicly defended the Jets quarterback, rejecting claims that he was unable or unwilling to care for his child. The development comes only months after Smith returned to the Jets. The two-time Pro Bowler was traded from the Las Vegas Raiders to New York in March and is preparing for his second stint with the franchise that originally drafted him in 2013.
