20 cobras rescued from household well in Mandsaur
Panic erupted in Mandsaur’s Sayam Diamond colony Saturday when a resident discovered his well filled with nearly 20 venomous cobra hatchlings.

INDORE: Panic spread in a residential colony in Mandsaur city on Saturday after a resident found his household well teeming with venomous cobras. As the word spread, hundreds of anxious neighbours arrived at the house in Sayam Diamond colony and started peeping into the dark depths of the well where nearly 20 cobra hatchlings were writhing. Sensing the imminent danger, the family immediately called local snake rescue expert, Kamal Das Bairagi. What followed was a high stakes rescue operation. As the cobras were nestled deep inside the well, Bairagi asked a tanker operator to flood the well with water. As the water level surged, the snakes were forced to swim to the surface.Working with calculated precision under the gaze of a breathless crowd, Bairagi carefully secured all 20 venomous cobras one by one into ventilated containers, ensuring no harm came to the onlookers or the reptiles. Following strict wildlife protection guidelines, the cobras were later released into a dense, remote forest habitat away from human settlement. The incident left residents of the colony deeply rattled. Speaking after the operation, Bairagi urged the public to stay calm in such situations. “When monsoon hits, flooding forces snakes out of their subterranean burrows and into residential areas. Never try to kill them. If bitten, do not waste precious time on traditional occult practices or home remedies-rush straight to the hospital. Modern antivenom is the only thing that saves lives,” Bairagi said.
