Father charged with murder and torture of four-month-old baby to remain in custody

A father charged with murder and torture over the death of his baby in 2024 will remain in custody.

Alexander James Young, 22, was arrested on Friday as part of ongoing police investigations into the baby’s death.

He has been charged with domestic violence offences of murder and torture.

On February 26, 2024, paramedics were called to an Electra Street home in Bundaberg West.

A four-month-old baby, Lucas Young, was taken by the paramedics to Bundaberg Hospital, then flown to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.

The baby died a week later.

Hospital staff flagged the baby’s injuries and reported the matter to police.

Mr Young appeared via video link in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court today.

Several supporters were in the courtroom. A woman cried during the proceedings.

Magistrate John McInnes ordered a brief of evidence be prepared.

Mr Young remains in custody and the matter will return to court on August 25.

‘Difficult investigation’

Speaking prior to the court hearing on Monday, Detective Inspector Wade Lee said the baby’s injuries were consistent with “what’s commonly known as a child-shaking injury”.

“Police have subsequently conducted a meticulous and challenging investigation,” he said.

“The investigation of a child death is a particularly difficult investigation.”
