Nag Panchami is one of the major Hindu festivals which is celebrated on Panchami tithi of shukla paksha in the month of Shravan. The festival is celebraated to worship worship all the Nagas, serpents and snakes. People feed them with milk and other offerings and worship them with devotion. The day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor in North India. This is very important to worship them for the good health and well being of the family members.According to Hindu mythology, Nagas always hold a greay importance in Hindu religion. There are mainly 12 types of Nagas in Hinduism (from Shesha Naga to Vasuki). It is believed that all nagas are descended from the sage Kashyap and Daksha’s daughter Kadru. Shesha was the eldest, followed by Manasa, Vasuki, and many more. Many tales about nagas portray them as always angry and poisonous, however some of them are really compassionate, when they see how devoted their devotees are.

According to the legend, the Kathmandu Valley was originally a lake ruled by venomous snakes, and it was impossible for the human to live there peacefully. They consequently started worshippiing Nagas and gave each one a specific place. Nag Panchami has been cheerfully and fervently observed ever since.Since Nag Chandreshwar Temple only opens on Nag Panchami Day in Mahakaleshwar temple, devotees take this as an opportunity to visit there and seek blessings of Nag Chandreshwar and offer sincere prayers to all the Nagas on this day. On this day, the Mahakaleshwar Temple is open twenty-four hours a day for the devotees to meet Lord Nag Chandreshwar.Nag Panchami is also celebrated in the Mansa Mata Temple in Haridwar, where a large number of devotees gather to see Goddess Mansa, who is worshiped as Lord Shiva’s daughter and the Goddess of all Nagas.
Nag Panchami 2026: History
According to Hindu texts, Janmajeya, the son of Parikshit, arranged a Yajna for Nagas in an effort to exact revenge and eradicate the whole clan ofserpents, when his father was killed by the Takshak serpent. The son of Rishi Jaratkaru and Aastik Muni stopped this yajna on Shravan Shukla Panchami tithi to save all the serpents. Takshak Snake and his clan were saved and the day is celebrated as Nag Panchami. This fesival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor across the North India.
