Dibrugarh: Flood-hit Jorhat has extended the summer vacation for 66 schools and educational institutions until Aug 15.The district administration’s order, issued on Saturday by DC Jay Shivani, applies to institutions that remain inundated or are being used as relief camps.The affected institutions are spread across the East Jorhat, North West, Central Jorhat, Jorhat and Titabar education blocks.Heads of institutions, teachers and other staff will have to continue reporting for duty and undertake preparatory and restoration work. Institution heads have also been directed to coordinate with the district administration and the inspector of schools, Jorhat, to protect school property, infrastructure, official records and other assets.The schools will reopen after the flood situation improves, with the resumption date to be announced separately.This is the administration’s second extension of the summer break. On July 31, it extended the vacation until Aug 8 for 125 schools in flood-hit areas, citing student safety.That order directed teaching and non-teaching staff to report from Aug 1 for restoration, sanitisation and desilting, besides structural and electrical safety inspections. Institutions with scheduled examinations were exempted, provided adequate safety measures were in place.Assam’s school summer vacation began on July 1 and was scheduled to end on July 31. Continued flooding in Jorhat has forced the administration to extend the break twice for the worst-affected institutions.
