Raipur: India won its third weightlifting silver in the ongoing Commonwealth Games, 2026 in Glasgow on Monday, after Gyaneshwari Yadav, the daughter of an electrician from Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon district, scripted history in the women’s 53 kg category, becoming only the third athlete from the state to win a CWG medal.In a performance marked by composure and power, Gyaneshwari finished second with a total lift of 199 kg — 88 kg in the snatch competition and 111 kg in the clean and jerk, clinching silver.Her feat took India’s overall medal tally in weightlifting to four, with 2020 Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu winning her third career gold in CWG earlier.Gyaneshwari’s overall lift, though fetching her silver, fell 7kg short of her Nigerian counterpart, who won gold in the category.Describing the achievement as a triumph of grit and steel, Rajesh Janghel of the Chhattisgarh Weightlifting Association said Gyaneshwari displayed exceptional composure under pressure to win silver, further strengthening India’s reputation in weightlifting events in Commonwealth Games.Gyaneshwari’s feat marked another significant milestone for Chhattisgarh sports, as she joined an elite list of CWG medallists from the state after former India hockey player Saba Anjum and shuttler Aakarshi Kashyap.Anjum was the first Chhattisgarh athlete to win a CWG medal after bringing home a gold with the Indian women’s hockey team at the2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games. She also represented India at the 2006 Melbourne CWG.Kashyap became the second CWG medallist from the state after winning silver in the mixed team badminton event at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022.Rustam Sarang Sarang, a former weightlifter from Chhattisgarh, represented India at the 2010 and 2014 CWG but narrowly missed out on a podium finish.
