On July 22, thousands of young Mumbaikars poured onto the streets in support of the student movement led by the Cockroach Janta Party. Many arrived simply intending to march. A few left as the defining faces of the protest.
One stepped in front of a police van and refused to move. Another quietly switched on his phone as a constable allegedly threatened detained protesters with a fabricated narcotics case. A theatre artist stayed inside a police station after she had been allowed to leave, insisting that every detained woman be released first. A law student followed a police van through traffic, reached for its rear latch and opened the door.
