Fire at Essendon North cafe treated as suspicious, days after alleged drive-by shooting

A cafe in Melbourne’s north that was hit by an alleged drive-by shooting on Friday has caught fire overnight, with authorities treating the blaze as suspicious.

Emergency services were called to reports of a fire on Mount Alexander Road about 1am, which caused significant damage to both the cafe and the neighbouring post office.

Victoria Police said no-one was inside the cafe at the time.

A crime scene has now been established, with an arson chemist to attend the scene later today.

Investigators said they had been told a dark-coloured SUV was seen fleeing the scene.

The suspicious fire comes just three days after shots were fired into the same cafe in an alleged drive-by shooting.

Bullet holes were still visible in panes of glass outside the cafe as firefighters worked to battle the fire.
