Dolphins trade starting QB Ryan Tannehill to Titans

The Miami Dolphins have traded former starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill to the Tennessee Titans.

Tannehill’s agents, SportsTrust Advisors, announced the move Friday afternoon and indicated that Tennessee signed Tannehill to a one-year contract.

Tannehill now becomes the backup quarterback to starter Marcus Mariota after an uneven seven-year stretch in Miami. Most recently, he completed 64.2 % of his passes for 1,979 yards with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 11 games in 2018.

According to multiple reports, the Dolphins sent Tannehill and a sixth-round selection in the 2019 draft in exchange for a 2020 fourth-round pick and a 2019 seventh-round selection. The new terms of Tannehill’s contract, per reports, include $7 million fully guaranteed for the season, with incentives that could grow that number to $12 million.

Miami used the No. 8 overall selection in the 2012 NFL draft on Tannehill, who instantly became the starter.

Tannehill helped take the Dolphins to the 2016 postseason before suffering a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament. He later missed all of 2017 after he underwent surgery to repair the issue.

For the Titans, Tannehill, 30, provides some insurance, as Mariota has also dealt with injury issues of his own, including a stinger. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft has yet to play all 16 games in a season.

Miami, meanwhile, now needs to find a solution to its quarterback void. The Dolphins made a last-ditch effort to sway Teddy Bridgewater away from making a commitment to the Saints, but the veteran ultimately opted to remain in New Orleans.

The only remaining quarterbacks on Miami’s roster are  Jake Rudock – who is entering his third season and has attempted only five passes – and Luke Falk – who was a rookie last year and didn’t throw once.
