Logan Paul, a controversial top 10 YouTube earner who made headlines after posting footage of an apparent suicide in Japan’s Aokigahara forest, apologized for saying he would “go gay” for a month.
Recent trouble for Logan, 23, began last week after he and co-host Mike Majlak began discussing month-by-month new year’s resolutions on his new podcast “Impaulsive.” When it came to March, Logan said:
“It’s male-only March. We’re going to attempt to go gay for just one month,” Paul said.
People swiftly condemned the comment
GLAAD reacted to Paul’s comment with a brief statement, tweeting, “That’s not how it works, @LoganPaul.”
“Logan Paul Joking about being gay ‘for one month’ while countless LGBT+ around the world are killed & committing suicide for their sexuality is disgusting. He continues to be an awful representation of the YouTube community & shows he truly has learned NOTHING over the last year.”
Paul’s podcast has 1.1 million subscribers. His YouTube channel has more than 18 million subscribers and is hugely popular with kids and teens.
Paul reached out to GLAAD on Twitter with an (almost) apology.
He called his comments a “very poor choice of words…my fault.”
Then he invited representatives of the advocacy group for the LGBTQ community onto his podcast.
GLAAD has not publicly replied to Paul’s invitation.
Last year’s Japanese suicide forest scandal
This controversy comes a year after Logan took huge heat for filming and posting what appeared to be a dead body hanging from a tree in Japan’s Aokigahara forest.
Logan was scorned for his insensitivity after the January 2018 ordeal. He apologized on Twitter and also released an apology video on his YouTube channel, where he promised to learn from his mistakes.
“I know I’ve made mistakes. I know I’ve let people down,” he says in the video. “But what happens when you’re given an opportunity to help make a difference in the world?”
