A University of Delaware running back has been charged with assaulting a 77-year-old driver Saturday, after his car struck the football player’s mother, police said.

Sakeena Pickett was crossing South College Avenue outside of a crosswalk at 7:50 p.m., when the 77-year-old’s car struck her, Lt. Andrew Rubin of Newark police said.

Police said the driver got out of the car to check on Pickett when her son, Khory D. Spruill, a Blue Hens player, punched him in the head and face and struck and dented the car.

Bystanders helped the driver get back in his car, and he drove off. The man sustained facial injuries from the assault, but declined medical attention, Rubin said.

Pickett was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Spruill of Clinton, Maryland, was charged with second-degree assault and criminal mischief. He turned himself in to police and was released on a $6,500 unsecured bail.

No charges will be filed against the driver, Rubin said.

Spruill is a sophomore running back who didn’t carry the football but did play in Saturday’s 40-36 win over Towson at Delaware Stadium. On the season, he has 14 carries for 37 yards and one touchdown.

As a freshman in 2017, he had 51 carries for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

The university said it is cooperating with Newark Police and has referred the matter to the University’s Student Conduct office.

“As always, the safety and welfare of all members of the Blue Hens family is of the utmost priority,” said UD spokesman Scott Day.
